We seek experienced CS teachers who can provide ongoing, rigorous 1:1 support to novice high school CS teachers. As a mentor, you will develop a relationship with one novice CS teacher and meet with your partner virtually one hour twice per month throughout the school year. Goals of these mentorship meetings are to plan for and reflect on lessons, address challenges, build knowledge and skills, and monitor progress towards goals.

CSTA Wisconsin Dairyland, New Jersey, and the Black Affinity Group are partnering with CSTA and WestEd to continue this National Science Foundation-sponsored project. CSTA will train mentors and organize monthly community of practice (CoP) meetings to deepen skills and learn from other teachers. WestEd will lead research activities and collect mentor / mentee feedback. 

Who Qualifies to Be a Mentor?


  • Be a current or recent high school teacher

  • Have four or more years experience teaching CS

  • Be a member of CSTA's Black Affinity Group,
    CSTA New Jersey, or CSTA Wisconsin Dairyland

  • Be willing and able to join:

    • initial mentor training on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at the CSTA Conference in Las Vegas (CSTA will cover registration + travel expenses!)

    • monthly, virtual community of practice meetings (likely Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30pm CT)


What Will Mentors Do?

  • Virtually meet with mentee twice per month (about one hour each, at a consistent and mutually agreeable time) from September to May

  • Participate in initial mentor PD in person at the CSTA Conference (July 2024) and monthly community of practice meetings with other mentors (7:00 - 8:30 pm CT on Tuesday evenings)

  • Participate in research activities, including surveys, focus groups, and interviews (most will be completed during mentoring or community of practice meetings)

Total time commitment is estimated at 4 hours per month throughout the school year.


What Will Mentors Receive?

  • $2,000 stipend, plus swag

    2024 CSTA Annual Conference
